Greenbaum encountered an "incompetent" gas station worker and named the character after Gomer Cool (a writer) and Denver Pyle (an actor on The Andy Griffith Show). Andy Griffith found Jim Nabors while he was working at The Horn, a nightclub in Santa Monica, and cast him as Gomer. Gomer was only supposed to be in one episode, but he was so popular that Nabors got his own spin-off show made by Aaron Ruben after appearing in seasons 3 and 4. The first episode of Gomer Pyle was filmed in 1963 as part of The Andy Griffith Show, but it didn't show until 1964, at the end of the fourth season of The Andy Griffith Show. In this episode, Andy goes with Gomer to the Marine recruitment base at Camp Lejeune. ▶ Genre: Sitcom, Television Series Director: Coby Ruskin Writers: Bill Idelson, Sam Bobrick Starring Jim Nabors, Frank Sutton, and Ronnie Schell.
