The biggest Ghost Town in the West... home to the "Bad man from Bodie" - unrestored and left in a state of "Arrested Decay" - Bodie, California. At over 8,000 feet in Elevation, its one of the highest and driest, and was one of the richest, largest, and most wicked Gold mining towns in the west - "Last of the boomtowns" - If you're looking for an epic abandoned ghost town, you can't do much better than Bodie. At it's peak in 1880 it had an estimated 10,000 full time residents, with thousands of pack animals to boot. Without water, or lumber, or farms, everything had to be channeled up the mountains and packed in to keep the dozens of mines and multiple stamp mills running, as last-chance prospectors and miners poured in from the western sierras "played out" gold rush towns, and from the comstock to the east. Full of history and mystery, the town of Bodie is now a California State Historic Park, available to visit for anyone hardy enough to climb the 8,000 feet and travel down the gravel road along the hills!
