Did you know the Greek naval victory at Salamis in 480 BCE was crucial in turning the tide against Xerxes and the invading Persians? The final stand of Leonidas and his band of warriors at the battle of Thermopylae galvanized Greek resistance. After a slim victory at Thermopylae, the Persians marched south into central Greece. Xerxes’ burned the city of Athens. The Greek states were inspired to continue the fight. It bought critical time for Greek alliances to form, and for Athens to prepare its navy. Themistocles, the Athenian naval commander, lured the massive Persian fleet into the narrow straits of Salamis. The Greek triremes, with superior maneuverability, decimated the Persian navy. Xerxes, fearing being trapped in Europe, retreated with most of his army back to Asia. The next year, a united Greek army, led by the Spartans and other states, confronted the remaining Persian forces. At Plataea, the Greeks ended Xerxes’ invasion in mainland Greece with a decisive win. On the same day, the Greeks also destroyed the Persian fleet at Mycale.
