RAW Court: Issiah Ross in court for murder trial of Lyric Woods, Devin Clark

Issiah Mehki Ross, the 17-year-old charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Lyric Woods and Devin Clark, appears in court Tuesday. Orange County Assistant District Attorney Anna Orr said that Woods and Clark were running away from Ross when they were shot, arguing that they were executed. "I have to point out the heinousness of this event," Orr said. "Devin and Lyric were shot in the back while they were running away from this vehicle. They were shot outside the car. They were not shot inside the car. And the grouping of the shots show that they traveled some distance. They both had shots at close range. They were executed. This was not some struggle over a gun and the gun went off. This was much more serious than that." Judge Allen Baddour ruled no bond. In the fall, weeks passed before Ross was caught in Delaware. Orr told the judge that Ross told a friend about what happened and the friend approached authorities. She argued Ross posed a flight risk and said the evidence supported no bond. "We have significant evidence that connects Mr. Ross to the commission of this crime," Orr said. A motive was not revealed. Ross will be back in court in June. Ross' attorney Jonathan Trapp said the firearm used in the murder belonged to Clark's father and that Ross knew one of the victims, but not both. Trapp had a motion for bond consideration as well as the return of some property. Trapp disputed that Ross was a flight risk and said the crimes Ross is accused of are not of his character. Orr told the judge a preliminary autopsy revealed that Woods was shot at least four times, of which she was shot twice in the back, once in the arm and once in the neck from close range. Clark was shot at least five times, including three times in the back, once in the foot, once in the bottom of the heel and once in the back of the head. There were many supporters of Woods and Clark in the courtroom. The family of the victims got emotional as the autopsy details were revealed. "Just know that we’re going to get justice," said Tiffany Concepcion, Clark's mother, after Tuesday's hearing. "That’s all, it’s going to be served. It’s not going to ever stop, all the way to June we’re still going to be fighting for Devin and Lyric." Ross, who was 17 at the time of the crime, had a previous juvenile record in Delaware and was still on probation at the time of the shooting. Ross turned 18 in December. Ross, who went into custody on Oct. 5, is being tried as an adult on charges of killing 14-year-old Woods and 18-year-old Clark in September. The bodies of Woods, 14, and Clark, 18, were found on Sept. 18 off a remote ATV path. "Right now, Issiah Ross is the face of this, without any understanding or explanation," Trapp argued. Ross, who went to school with Clark at Eastern Alamance High School in Mebane, first appeared in court at the end of last year, when Ross' attorney filed two motions for a bond hearing and return of property. A spokesperson from the Orange County Sheriff's Office says Ross had not been living in North Carolina for long. School records show Ross went to Eastern Alamance High School with Clark – but only for six days, at the beginning of the school year. Ross was enrolled from Aug. 29 to Sept. 3. Ross was apprehended by the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force on Oct. 5 at Leander Lakes apartment in Dover, Delaware near where Ross' family lives. Two women were also arrested at the apartment complex for hindering prosecution. Nakaysha Ross, from Middletown, Delaware, and McKenzie Mitchell, from Dover, were taken into custody. Concepcion spoke with WRAL News after his court appearance in November. She said Clark and Ross knew each other and that in total, three lives have been lost as a result of what happened. Ross is being held without bond. He will be tried as an adult, though he's not eligible for the death penalty because he is under 18 years old.
