Based on his pioneering work in the recent book High Weirdness: Drugs, Esoterica, and Visionary Experience in the Seventies, author and podcaster Erik Davis will explore the phenomenon of occult revivals, comparing and contrasting some of the factors that made the early 1970s and the late 2010s hotbeds of occultism, witchcraft, and visionary experience. Featuring films by visual artists Dustin Wong and Amanda Siegel. Speaker bio: Erik Davis, Ph.D., is an author, scholar, podcaster, and award-winning journalist. His books include Nomad Codes: Adventures in Modern Esoterica (Yeti, 2010), The Visionary State (Chronicle, 2006), TechGnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information (Crown, 1998), and a short critical volume on Led Zeppelin. Davis’s essays on music, technoculture, and spirituality have appeared in dozens of books and publications, and his work has been translated into a dozen languages. A frequent talking head in documentaries, Davis explores the “cultures of consciousness” on his podcast Expanding Mind. He recently published High Weirdness: Drugs, Esoterica, and Visionary Experience in the Seventies (MIT Press/Strange Attractor).
