Focus on implementation of low nitrogen diets in animal farming | Evonik

In this video, our Director of Technical Consultancy, Dr. Andreas Lemme, answers the question: what hinders or limits protein reduction today? “Firstly, one needs to have good knowledge about the composition and quality of feed ingredients. Technologies are available to quickly get the required information. In the context of amino acid nutrition, we have developed near-infrared spectroscopy calibrations to get the full analysis of ingredients within seconds. Secondly, feed producers need to know about the requirements of the animals, or better, the optimal amino acid (AA) levels under changing conditions. While we have a good idea for practical situations, we also know that requirements change. The main reason for not reducing the protein lies in the economics. Feed is usually formulated by least cost formulations. That means, the program is fed with specifications on one hand – so the required levels on nutrients and energy – and with nutrient levels and prices of each ingredient on the other hand. The software then searches for the cheapest solution. If AAs provided by macro ingredients are cheaper than added AAs, the program would choose these sources which bring more protein into the diets. Only if the allowance for protein in the diets is restricted, least cost will search for another solution. However, having said this, in many cases, not all free AAs are offered in the formulation.
