Planting Party: Bossville Farms cultivates the next generation of SC hemp farmers

In December of 2018, congress passed the Farm Bill Act, included in this bill was the U.S. Hemp Farming Act, which removed hemp from the Controlled Substance List. This opened the door for the South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) to gain approval for the new state hemp plan with this came a wave of applications for grower permits. As interest in hemp farming continues to grow, the need to train new farmers has also increased; which is why Derick Hopkins, of Bossville Farms, recently hosted a Hemp 101 Planting Party. Working alongside Derick is Mr. Thomas Dawkins, or Coach, as he’s affectionately known, has a long history of serving as a community advocate and mentor to area youth. With deep knowledge of the industry, it was only fitting that he would take on the mantle of coaching the next generation of farmers. And where Coach brings a deep knowledge of farming, Derrick is expanding on his legacy in the agribusiness industry. He is an heir to the Gordon Logging dynasty, which his grandfather, Walter Nathaniel Gordon, founded over 70 years ago. I had the opportunity to attend their Planting Party and talk with them both about this evolving agriculture opportunity and what makes hemp such a special crop.
