A Matter of Life and Death, written produced and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger is widely regarded to be one of the finest films ever made. David Niven plays Peter Carter, an RAF bomber pilot who should have been killed returning from a raid, but Conductor 71, played by Roger Livesey, who has been sent to collect him, misses him in the fog and Carter survives. Carter falls in love with June, a USAAF radio operator, played by Kim Hunter, and when the Conductor returns to take him to the afterlife, Carter launches an appeal.
