While several female versions exist - most notably those of Elfie Mayerhofer and Lizzi Waldmüller - most of these were sung by sopranos... Gloria Astor - with her deep voice - delivers a completely different version... She is accompanied by the Eugen Jahn band ... Gloria Astor is somewhat of a mystery. She made recordings for Tempo and Phonoton. After the Second World War she sang with the RBT (Radio Berlin Tanzorchester) which had been founded by Michael Jary in 1945 (in the Sowjet controlled zone). Erwin Lehn and Horst Kudritzki became the orchestra's leaders in 1946. Astor married Horst Kudritzki and the couple left the GDR in 1950. Gloria Astor had performed a lot on the radio and on the stage yet made relatively few recordings. Her last known public performance was in 1954 at Berlin's Waldbühne. About the record Phonoton 1023a / C:1410 Berlin, 1941 The record is in rather used condition. The Phonoton records have a typical sound - quite "box" like. The label only existed for a few years and did not have "big names" to offer... It did not reappear after the Second World War. This record was recorded with an Nagaoka MP10 cartridge with 3,5mm 78rpm stylus as well as 78rpm phono preamp. The restoration was done as truthfully as possible.
