Wait, Should You Spend or Save Money During a Recession?

In a recession (or just a sluggish economy) there are often two different schools of thought when it comes to dealing with personal finances. One: Spending your money to help stimulate the economy or Two: saving it to protect yourself against future income drops. In theory, spending your money (if you can afford to do so) means that you can boost businesses so they can grow and hire more people who then in turn can earn more and go and spend, and so on. Doing so helps things get back to normal faster and sets up a stronger economic future. But then there is saving. During economic downturns, it’s important to watch your spending carefully. Especially since during this time, there is likely to be financial uncertainty. It could be that your hours get cut back or you may lose your job. Even if you’re lucky enough to keep your job you still need to be mindful of any future changes that you don’t anticipate and you need to be prepared for that. Both are valid arguments, but which is better? Saving your money or spending it? Like everything it’s a little more complicated than just saying one is better than the other, so that’s why I wanted to talk about it.
