Mycetoma: Neglected but not Forgotten

Mycetoma is a chronic disabling disease that's one of the most neglected in the world. But there is hope for patients: results from research by DNDi in partnership with the ‪@MycetomaSUDAN‬, ‪@erasmusmc‬, and Eisai Co., Ltd. show that a new oral treatment is safe, patient-friendly, and effective in treating the disease. ** Content warning: video contains footage of mycetoma lesions that some viewers may find disturbing. ** In this film, we speak to people with #mycetoma and the researchers and doctors who are working towards better treatments. Mycetoma is a chronic infection caused by bacteria or fungi. It's found in many countries across Africa, Asia, and the Americas, with Sudan and Mexico reporting the highest number of cases worldwide. The lack of effective treatment for fungal mycetoma meant that amputation was often the only solution for patients. The global burden of mycetoma is currently unknown due to a lack of surveillance and resources to conduct research on the disease. This has resulted in limited epidemiological data. However, DNDi and its partners aim to fill this knowledge gap by assessing the local needs for treatment in key endemic countries through literature review, retrospective data collection, and epidemiological field surveys.
