Anemoia I for Tenor Trombone and Tuba (2025/2026) Premiere 2026. 01. 09 Brahmssaal, Hochschule für Musik Detmold, Germany ───────────────────── Weston Olencki (Trombone) Max Murray (Tuba) Ensemble Apparat (Berlin, Germany) ───────────────────── Vortragsabend der Klasse Prof. Dr. Mark Barden ───────────────────── Program Note : The term Anemoia refers to a sense of longing and nostalgia for a past time and space that one has never personally experienced. For me, however, this feeling extends beyond a mere nostalgic impulse: Anemoia becomes an essential emotional connection that, within modern society, links the past, the present, and the future. Although the history of music has continually transformed across different eras—from the Baroque through the Classical and Romantic periods and beyond—I am convinced that its roots remain firmly anchored in a particular place. People listen to and analyze works from different times and often experience a profound sense of admiration in doing so. At times, listening alone is sufficient to evoke a feeling of catharsis. From this perspective, the present work aims to explore a broad spectrum of sonic expressions, ranging from Baroque allusions and elements of Old High German to contemporary performance techniques. Particularly prominent are references to the style of a minuet, as well as treatments that recall Bachian choral traditions. Even though these references emerge most clearly within this piece, what ultimately remains is only their essence—their framework—as an echo of the past. Thus, this work seeks to reflect the nostalgia for a past never personally lived within our present-day reality: not merely as an expression of longing for bygone times, but also as an invitation to reflect on the path we may choose to follow in the future.
