Installment 5 finds us at Lake McClure, which, due to the recent drought has lowered the lake level beneath the old YV roadbed and Tunnels 2, 3 and 4, all part of the 1926 alignment after construction of the original Exchequer dam. We take advantage of the low lake level and hike the YV roadbed between old Exchequer dam, McClure Point and Barrett's Station, and along the way explore Tunnels 2, 3 and 4 and the 310' Bridge 35A, just East of Tunnel 4. The condition of the roadbed through this section is a mix of very good and extremely eroded, with both conditions often being within close proximity. The tunnels are definitely showing their age, and 50+ years of immersion beneath the waters of Lake McClure. That they are still standing is amazing, and very fortunate for rail fans and history geeks (like me...). And what makes this section so special in YV history is that it was the first view of the lake shore for passengers travelling from Merced, in California's Central Valley, to El Portal near the Western entrance of Yosemite National Park. It's a very fun and enjoyable hike, and all the more interesting due to the erosion and terraces brought about from 50+ of residing under water. #abandonedrailway #steamengines #yosemite #yosemitevalley
