Because they’re actually quite similar. Living simply whilst respecting your surroundings, always hunting for the perfect spot, and finding creative ways to take a shit. When it comes down to it the biggest difference between these two activities is that a van is 20 grand but you can get a tent for only 20 bucks. Moving into a van without ever trying camping is like buying all the gear to scuba dive without ever having gone snorkelling. Before you make a huge investment, put a straw in your mouth and go splash around in the water a little bit. TIP#2 Spend more up front. I learned this lesson when I first moved to the UK and was working with the modest budget of “as cheap as I can possible get.” I made my home in a Citroen Berlingo I bought off Gumtree which is a website that facilitates an online garage sale with an entire cities’ junk. Just as a tree exuding gum results in sticky situations, I lived our of my self renovated Berli the Berlingo for 2 years, 75% of that time spent in the exact same parking spot because fixing all her issues was way more expensive then what she was worth. At the old saying goes it’s much better to spend more to get a vehicle that’s mechanically sound, then put lipstick on a pig. TIP#3 Have your parking spot picked before dark. At least 30 minutes before sundown is what I aim for because if you’re constantly having to sleep in unfamiliar territory it’s to your advantage to see that landscape. Finding parking after dark means you’re more likely to miss signage resulting in a late night knock, sleep somewhere compromising your safety, or worse of all you could wake up in a grade school parking lot. TIP#4 Have money to bail yourself out. For this van life tip you can just go ahead and drop the van part because this is a great life tip. One of the main reasons I have the freedom to do what I do is because I was lucky enough to have a dad who’s a financial planner. Sure as a kid I didn’t know what savings were, I just knew that it meant my dad took half my money from Christmas and Birthdays so they sucked. I didn’t have the foresight to know that at some point I’d be doing a buck thirty in Cele the Mazda 3 I was living in when the front drivers’ side tire would remove itself from the vehicle and rotate perpendicularly like the Delorian from back to the future 3200 kms away from home… but luckily my dad did. Learn to save your money kids, because life’s full of hills and valleys and when your vehicle/home lets you down at the bottom of one, having a safety net guarantees you can get back up. TIP#5 Zero Expectations.
