Kazakhstan held a military parade in its capital Astana on Thursday to mark the 70th anniversary of victory day in World War II. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev took part in the parade and reviewed the troops. The parade was also part of the country's celebration at Kazakh Eli square to commemorate its Fatherland Defender's Day, which fell on Thursday. According to local media, more than 5,000 soldiers, some 200 military vehicles and 70 warplanes took part in the one-hour parade. Modern military equipment such as Su-30 fighters, T72 tanks and Katyusha, a kind of rocket launcher that was used during WWII, also paraded through the square. Warplanes concluded the parade in the formation of the number 70, marking the 70th anniversary of victory day. "I was a child when the war broke out, but I worked for the frontline too. Adult men all went to the battlefield and women and children did their best to provide logistics support in order to secure the victory," said Abay Tues, a Kazakh veteran. In 1992, Kazakhstan named May 7 as Fatherland Defender's Day. The day celebrates the establishment of the country's own army after the dissolution of the Soviet Union at the end of 1991. By launching a military parade, it is hoped that the millions of Kazakh people who died fighting the Nazis during WWII will be remembered by the younger generation. "Young people should see this and know about the history. Seventy years ago, millions of Kazakh people died in the war and all the families in Kazakhstan suffered from the war. So the duty of the elder generation is to safeguard the peace," said Sagan Melibekovich Kabakov, major general of Kazakhstan's reserve forces. More on: http://newscontent.cctv.com/NewJsp/ne...
