The Whiskey Crusaders review Dewar's "White Label" Blended Scotch Whisky which comes in at 80 proof. Dewar’s White Label came out in 1899 and has been in production for over 120 years. It was the first blend to come out of Aberfeldy a year after the distillery was completed. Also A. J. Cameron pioneered and created the first double aged whiskies by combining and marrying the whiskies into another oak cask for several months or years after. The top 10 selling blended scotch in the world and number 1 in the US market and used the most by bartenders in Japan to make highballs. Which is whisky, soda, and ice. It is made up of 40 different single malts and single grains with Aberfeldy being the largest percentage along with Craigellachie, Aultmore, Royal Brackla, Deveron, and several others. John Dewar & Sons Ltd was founded in 1846 by John Dewar who started as a small wine and spirits merchant in Perth, Scotland. His sons John Alexander and Tommy joined the family business working the counter as children initially but once the Spirit Act passed John was able to start making his own blends for the shop. The Celtic knot is formed by the 3 D’s from the founder for strength and longevity. In the 1880’s the business was inherited by John Alexander as the brains behind the business and Tommy the playboy, marketing genius, socialite, author, and champion chicken breeder. Tommy also believed in only working in the morning and the rest of the day to play. In 1890 they hired A. J. Cameron to come on as a desk clerk who would eventually become master blender and create the double aged process. Andrew Carnegie event requested a small cask for James Garfield’s inauguration and then the same for Benjamin Harrison for his in 1891 which Tommy used to his advantage saying the president even wanted to drink Dewar’s. American distillers were not pleased at his foreign whisky. In 1892 Tommy wrote a book called Ramble Round the Globe in which he visited 26 countries, appointed 30 salesmen for brand, and invited the original Highball in New York City. Meanwhile in 1893 John Alexander was able to get a royal warrant from Queen Victoria and was the first blended scotch to do so. In 1896 construction for Aberfeldy was started as they needed a consistent product and to guarantee they would have the stock they needed for the blend. Dewar’s has won over 1000 medals in international competitions including a gold medal at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. It joined Distillers in 1925, Guinness in 1986, was merged to Diageo in 1997 and sold to Bacardi in 1998. Also, in 1987 still intact cases of Dewar’s were pulled from Lake Huron after a shipwreck in 1913 of the SS Regina. The Dewar Shield is also the oldest rugby league in Australia the Victoria Rugby Union founded in 1909 was donated to it. Dewar’s ran the first motion picture ad for scotch called “It’s Scotch” in 1898 and the first brand to use virtual reality to explorer Scotland when scratched cask was introduced in 2015. In 1998 Stephanie Macleod and in 2006 became Dewar’s first female master blender and 7th overall.
