Because of its isolation and unique structure, the sinkhole provides an ideal shelter for plants and animals. Species that have not been seen for over a century and other remarkable plants have survived in the area. One of the most exciting finds from the researchers’ trek was the Whytockia chiritiflora, which was last recorded by a British botanist in 1893. Their expedition could play an important role in preserving endangered species as they plan to explore other larger sinkholes in the region.
