Forensic Significance of Diatoms | Drowning #forensicscience Presented By Srishty Sinha Volunteer, Shivi Forensics Introduction: Diatoms are microscopic, single-celled algae that live in water bodies like rivers, lakes, and oceans. They have unique silica (glass-like) cell walls called frustules. Forensic significance: Diatoms can be super helpful in forensic investigations, especially in cases involving water or drowning. Uses in forensic science: Drowning investigations: Diatoms in a victim's tissue can indicate if death was due to drowning and potentially link the victim to a specific water body. Linking suspects to crime scenes: Diatoms on clothing, vehicles, or other evidence can connect a suspect to a water body or crime scene. Analyzing water samples: Diatoms can help identify the origin of water samples found at crime scenes or on evidence. How diatoms are used: Samples are extracted and the diatom species are identified based on their unique shell patterns. This can help investigators piece together what happened. Diatom analysis process: 1. Collect samples (water, tissue, or other evidence) 2. Extract diatoms using chemicals or filtration 3. Identify diatom species using microscopy 4. Compare diatoms from evidence to known water bodies Advantages: Diatoms are abundant in water bodies Unique species can pinpoint locations Can be used with other evidence (e.g., soil, pollen) Limitations: Requires expertise in diatom identification Diatoms can be affected by environmental factors (e.g., pollution, seasonal changes) #Diatoms #ForensicInvestigation #CrimeScene #DrowningInvestigation #WaterEvidence #ForensicAnalysis #Criminalistics #ForensicTechniques #EvidenceBased #InvestigativeTools #shiviforensics FOLLOW OUR SOCIAL MEDIA FOR MORE UPDATES Instagram 👉🏻 / shivi_forensics Facebook 👉🏻 / shiviforensics Linkedin 👉🏻 / shiviforensics Blogger 👉🏻 https://shiviforensics.blogspot.com WhatsApp 👉🏻 https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VbBd...
