Punishment in general only causes a temporary cessation of the problem behavior. The moment a child is attacked, be it in the form of a physical punishment or a verbal reprimand, the part of the brain responsible for learning shuts off. As a result, no learning as to why the behavior in question was wrong takes place. Another important reason to avoid physical punishment is that the punisher – a parent or a teacher – hits or yells because they are angry themselves and thus the action on their part is also not thought through. The children who are physically punished are only suppressing their anger and hostility. The anger and frustrations are internalized and later on in life may resurface in the form of aggressive and violent behavior. The Question Slip is an ICTRC YouTube Series which features Dr. V S Ravindran discussing topics and answering questions raised by participants at the various forums organized under ICTRC Project Paradigm. The series also features question raised by stakeholders through other media. The Question Slip is part of the Project Paradigm Digital initiative. The video is an excerpt from the Regional Summit of School Principals in Coimbatore. #DrVSR #ICTRC #ProjectParadigm #TheQuestionSlip Disclaimer: All views expressed in the video are based on the professional experience of the speaker.
