Great House 2022 recently hit shelves here in Chicago. This yearly blend from the folks at Hampden Estate in Trelawny is always a little different, always lots of fun, and always a little bit of an event (see • Hampden Great House 2021, versus LROK 2010... for a video I did on the previous two). The bad news is that there's less Great House to go around for this 2022 edition, and it's more expensive, and the collectibles market seems far more interested in snatching it all up. The good news is that, along with the old LFCH component sticking around from last year - that's the 90-120 g/hLaa of esters marque - there's a big dollop of HGML in this new one, which has a far more substantive 1000-1100 g/hLaa. It needs a sparring partner, though, and a suitable sample just happened to fall in my lap... Hampden Great House Distillery Edition 2022 Old Single Jamaican Rum (pot distilled molasses, 74% 3yo 2019 HGML and 26% 11yo 2011 LFCH, tropically aged; 55% ABV), 91/100 Golden Devil "Jamaica's Top Pots" 1993 27yo Single Barrel Jamaican Rum (Hampden Estate, picked by K&L Wines; pot distilled molasses, C🔷H or JMC marque, continentally aged; 66.1% ABV), 92+/100 The nose on the brand new Great House had me doubting a little, but the palate - especially with a splash of water - is almost certainly the best the series has produced thus far. Think pineapple upside down cake smothered in tobacco and flowers and you'll be close. And the Golden Devil is better still, if perhaps a hair monolithic. The 1993 K&L pick therefore wins on points, but the Great House 2022 is way less than half the price (and therefore better QPR). If I were to pick a winner overall, it might actually be Great House 2021 or even the old Overproof - about as good and cheaper still, so grab them if they're still around. In any case Hampden continues to put out absolute bangers at all levels, and these two do nothing to dissuade me from calling them pound-for-pound the best distillery on the planet.
