The ECHR

The European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) is an international treaty. States, which sign it, undertake to secure certain rights and freedoms to everyone within their jurisdiction. This video provides information on the history of the ECHR, its structure, the rights it enshrines and its interpretation. The ECHR was adopted in the aftermath of the 2n World War, as a reaction to the atroticities committed in Nazi Germany and to the growing threat of Stalinism and Communism. It was embedded in a wider movement aiming to entrench the protection of human rights in internationa law. The observance of the ECHR is controlled by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The Court's judgments are binding on the states. Beyond the ruling in the invididual case, its judgments frequently have an impact on the justice systems in all of Europe.
