Welcome Bright & Beautiful Souls! 🤍 Here we have an exceptionally beautiful rendition of the old mysterious Occtian (the language of southern France) Gnostic vowel chant Lo Boièr/Le Bouvier translates in English as The Heardsman sang by the very talented Patrick Lenk. The chant is associated with Catharism and the lyrics hold a very symbolic meaning that contains a hidden message for spiritual seekers. The chant was left for us by the Gnostic Cathars, whilst they were deep in the throes of the Albigensian Crusade- a movement ordered by the Church to eliminate hereticism in France- the Cathars, knowing they were doomed, they offered up this gorgeous encrypted chant as a gift to their descendants. This medieval Cathar song does not date from the ancient Gnostics, but from the Cathars, through a convoluted series of other less well known movements who inherited much of their philosophy and spiritual practices from the ancient Gnostic schools. Interestingly the drawn out vowel chants that occur between the verses (AEIOU), and their similarity with the vowel chants we see preserved in some of the ancient Gnostic texts, especially those of Sethian origin, named the Holy Book of The Great Invisible Spirit (sometimes referred to as the 'Gospel of The Egyptians'). The chant is not exactly the same as the Sethian chant which is IEOU but it is very similar and may suggest some kind of a connection. Apparently the Sethians used to use these mantric vowel chants to put themselves in a certain frame of mind or as a way to attune themselves with the Divine. The chant, at least in the form we know it today likely dates from the the early part of the Late Middle Ages and it has been studied and performed a multitude of times but this particular version is definitely the one of the most emotive I have come across. Massive respect to Mr Patrick Lenk, et al for a truly beautiful and and atmospheric rendition! Here to Bring You Love, Peace and Soothe Your Soul.
