I set out to build a home server… and it absolutely did not go to plan. Starting with mismatched hardware, missing parts, and a case that turned out to be very different from what I expected, this build quickly turned into a full custom project. From drilling out rivets and designing my own 3D-printed hard drive mounts, to battling proprietary motherboard quirks and eventually swapping platforms entirely, this was a proper “figure it out as you go” build. The goal? A powerful, self-hosted server to run open-source apps and move away from relying on cloud storage — all while reusing hardware where possible. In this video I cover: • The chaotic hardware journey • Designing and 3D printing a custom 8-drive mount • Case modification (and questionable tool choices) • Motherboard swap from legacy workstation to 11th gen platform If you like slightly cursed builds, problem solving, and DIY server projects — you’ll feel right at home here. _____ CHAPTERS: 0:00 - Intro 0:32 - Hardware 1:03 - First problem 2:11 - Case dismantle 3:39 - CAD/Design 4:26 - Sample 5:47 - HDD holder 9:31 - PC hardware assembly 14:35 - Finished build 14:41 - Thoughts/plan
