The Big Wheel: The First Ferris Wheel in the U.S.

The Big Wheel was introduced at Chicago's World's Fair in 1893. The idea was submitted by George Ferris. When it was finally approved by Fair organizers, Ferris had less than six months in which to build this amusement ride. It would stretch almost 300 feet in the air and carry two thousand passengers. Complicating this effort, the winter temperatures in Chicago were sub-zero. But Ferris met his goal and the Ferris Wheel ran for the duration of the Fair without a single problem.
