Emotional Intelligence is a phrase people are throwing around a lot these days. But what does EI mean and how does it impact our lives on a daily basis? Plus what does "interoception" have to do with emotional intelligence? To learn more about interoception, see our full on-demand courses here: https://www.kelly-mahler.com/product-... ----------------------- Video Summary: Today, I'll be discussing the new science behind emotional intelligence (EI) and its underlying influence called interoception. Emotional intelligence involves understanding and managing our own emotions as well as recognizing the emotions of others. Higher EI leads to better stress management, resilience, performance, and relationships. Interoception is a sense within our bodies, similar to sight or sound, that helps us feel our body signals. Receptors for interoception are spread throughout the body, providing information to the brain about how we feel physically. This incoming information serves as clues to our emotions. For example, a growling stomach indicates hunger, while a tingly feeling may signify anxiety. Interoception is the foundation of emotional intelligence. To enhance EI, we must start by improving interoception. It plays a crucial role in three aspects of emotional intelligence. First, being aware of our emotions requires noticing body signals and connecting them to the corresponding emotions. For example, tense muscles could indicate frustration, while goosebumps might mean feeling cold. Interoception enables us to clearly identify what we're experiencing emotionally. Second, managing emotions effectively requires a clear understanding of the exact emotions we're experiencing. Our bodies are internally motivated to seek actions that regulate emotions. Identifying emotions accurately allows us to choose appropriate actions for regulation. Third, interoception not only helps us recognize our own emotions but also enhances our ability to understand others' emotions. To understand someone else's feelings, we unconsciously recreate our own interoceptive experiences, putting ourselves in their shoes. Improving interoception involves taking time to notice body signals regularly. Body checks, performed several times a day, help us tune in to our physical sensations. Doing body checks during activities evoking strong emotions can be particularly helpful. Resources on interoception are available on my website, www.kelly-mahler.com. By focusing on interoception, we can take the first step towards developing a higher level of emotional intelligence. So be curious about your body signals and work towards enhancing your emotional intelligence.
