Wide of men and children around destroyed military vehicle STORYLINE A British soldier was killed and several others were injured Monday in clashes with militants in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, the British Ministry of Defence said. The dead soldier was not immediately identified. The attack took place hours after the spokesman of radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr in Basra threatened to turn Basra in a "second Najaf" with "fighting on the streets." The attack on the British patrolling jeeps happened at 1730 pm (1330 GMT) in the Tweisa neighbourhood of Basra, where the office of radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr is located. The two British jeeps were driving one kilometre (0.6 miles) apart when they were attacked by militants. Hours after the clash, armed men and boys were jumping on the top of the two military vehicles and chanting "We are the troops of the son of Sayeed (referring to Muqtada al-Sadr)." The British ministry of Defence issued a statement saying that there have been "a number of incidents within the British area of operations in and around Basra between insurgents and U.K. forces throughout the afternoon and early evening." Masked Mahdi Army gunmen patrolled some main streets in Basra on Monday and set up checkpoints, witnesses said. The incident brought the British military's death toll since the start of the Iraq war to 62. Earlier the Mahdi Army threatened to take over local government buildings and target oil pipelines and ports in southern Iraq if U.S. troops did not leave Najaf. Several hundred demonstrators gathered outside government offices, chanting support for the young radical Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Protestors denounced calls from Allawi that al-Sadr's al-Mahdi Army should withdraw from Najaf.
