4,000 subscribers. What a milestone. The past six months have been incredibly full, and I haven’t been able to dedicate the same time to YouTube that I once did. There was a season where I was uploading every second day — now I’m grateful if I can manage one substantial project a month. So for this milestone, I wanted to create something truly special. The Planets is one of my absolute favourite orchestral works — both to listen to and to perform. Holst’s writing for brass, and especially trombones, is powerful, dramatic, lyrical, and unforgettable. Bringing all the trombone parts together in one video has been a mammoth undertaking… but it felt like the right way to celebrate 4,000 of you. I’ll be releasing the individual trombone parts as well — but why not start with a bang? About the Piece Composed between 1914–1916, The Planets is a seven-movement orchestral suite, with each movement inspired by the astrological character of a planet rather than its astronomical properties. Holst creates striking contrasts across the suite — from the relentless 5/4 intensity of Mars to the grandeur of Jupiter, the haunting inevitability of Saturn, the mischievous brilliance of Uranus, and the ethereal fade into infinity in Neptune. The trombone writing throughout the suite is bold and commanding, often forming the backbone of the brass sound while also delivering some of the most dramatic moments in the entire work.
