I'm posting this just before Greg's 72nd birthday, (May the 4th), so that the lyrics make sense! When the fabulous musician, teacher and rhythm number nerd, Greg Sheehan https://gregsheehan.com.au turned 71 on May 4th, 2024, there was much chat about what would be the most fun way to divide up 71 as a groove. Laura Targett (with Greg) wrote a fab tune using Linsey Pollak's suggested 9-9-4 9-9-4 9-9-9 grouping, which I then had fun wedging 48 across ( / 1200277617782610 ). I'd suggested grouping 71 as 2 7 7 7 2 7 7 7 2 7 7 7 2, due to its lovely symmetry, and I was determined to write a tune using it that normal people (i.e. non music geeks) could play... and I did! http://malwebb.com/71v.mp3 . I wrote lyrics to it and we ended up playing it with the public orchestra (the Walkestra) at Woodford Festival • Greg Sheehan's 71 @ Woodford Folk Fest via... and then with the People's Orchestra at Cygnet Folk Festival. The chant of "71" at the end to tie it together was something I pinched from Laura's tune... noice! But me being me, I just had to give it the Malleable PolyPolyRhythm treatment. The complete explanation (and diagram) is at https://malwebb.com/mppr.html#71 , but in short, it uses combinations of two common polyrhythms, 2 across 3 and 3 across 4, subtly mashed together to make 49 across 71. And it doesn't need to be mushed much to make many of the accents line up. Now, with 49 being 7 x 7, I walked up the 7 notes of the major scale from the 4 chord, as F G F/A G/B C Dm E7 (so they fit the minor version of the tune) and then on the second lap, I went chromatically back to the 1 chord, as F D/F# G E/G# Am Bb B, which serendipitously didn't clash with the tune. Then, knowing that Greg would eventually turn 72, I rewrote the lyrics and made that version in 72, by just adding a beat to the end. But as 72 is divisible by 8 and 3, I put those grooves against it. BUT then added another beat at the end of it all, by means of a "cha cha cha", to make it 73... so we're all set for next year! Happy birthday, Greg! P.S. The fact that this arrangement ended up by 71 seconds was purely a fluke... woo hoo! Oh, and here's more about the way I count out the numbers: https://malwebb.com/numbers.html#rhythm
