Our band Unworld gets booked to open for Dave Matthews Band — then an unknown group from Charlottesville — at The Bayou, one of the most storied stages in the city, where U2 played their first US tour and Springsteen had come through. Then the promoter calls. The gig's off. Nobody bought tickets. And here's the kicker: nobody bought tickets for them either. So we went anyway. We drove to Georgetown, walked into an almost empty room, leaned up against the stage, and watched Dave Matthews Band play like they were filling an arena. Then Dave looked down at us and asked the question. This is that story. And the lesson baked inside it is one I still think about.
