May Beetle Larva - Baby June Bug (Phyllophaga specie) (Happy 2 Year Anniversary)

Original Post: https://jonnysinsectcatalogue.tumblr.... The Beetle larva shown here was replanted carefully in the soil after photography and filming concluded. Today's video is uploaded in celebration of this channel's 2 year anniversary! Just as in this channel's 1 year anniversary, I sincerely send a big thank you to all my watchers, subscribers, and all those who pay my channel a visit. Furthermore, I also thank all of my friends and family for their support and belief in me and for their contributions to this collection of assorted insects. Thank you for watching! There will always be Bugs (and many other insect orders of course), and thusly many more videos to find here in the near future. I hope you enjoy them, and that you enjoy learning about the amazing little animals with crawl and fly about on Earth. And now, for today's video: a quaint insect larva which was unearthed while digging in the front yard. With every new springtime arrival, there's always plant cleanup to attend to, and this day was no exception. The discovery of this insect came about while I was attempting to separate bishop's weed roots which entrenched themselves with the roots of my mother's rambling roses. As soil was overturned, this robust May Beetle (genus Phyllophaga) grub was revealed and observed. Actually, many May Beetle grubs were found while digging, but the filmed individual here was the largest one found that day, ranging about 4-5cm (factoring in curvature). Judging from its size, this larva was likely nearing its time to pupate, but we won't see that above ground. Although its movement seems off-balance and clumsy, this is only the case because its attempting to navigate above ground rather than tunnel. This larva's form is better suited for pulling itself through the soil as it chews and plows its way through the subterranean world and pulls itself forward using its powerful legs, rather than dragging its curved abdomen around. Despite its encumbrance above ground, this individual is still quite strong. Thanks to a steady diet of decaying plant matter and errant plant roots, larvae like this one are able to grow larger with each molting. May Beetle larvae will make use of their large mandibles to carve up their food and make it easier to eat, but against a predator or a human finger, their bite is little more than a sharp pinch. As such, they're quite vulnerable topside and should remain underground until their pupation has concluded. That said, they face all manner of threat underground too; rodents, birds and skunks can dig/snatch them up, and hungry predaceous insects gain ample nutrition from them. If the larvae can make it to pupation though, then everything gets better. If you don't recognize the larvae, perhaps you're more likely to recognize the adult form of this Beetle: an armored Scarab with a deep-brown shell, noisy flight and adorable oval appearance, like a glossy, earthen bean. Since the adults are very likely to emerge from the soil and take flight near the end of May or the beginning of June, these Beetles are also known as June Bugs. As they tread on the surface world, their diet switches from underground roots to fresh leaves (their genus name, Phyllophaga, meaning 'many leaves' references this), so they may be found munching as daylight dims. They are also a common sight at nighttime as they fly headfirst into outdoor lamps and light fixtures. The collision won't even phase them, and may in fact be beneficial in the long term as they get to meet other individuals at ground level who also collided with the light. There are many types of May Beetles, and they all appear similar to each other in terms of form. This makes May Beetles easy to identify at a glance, but identification down to the specie is very difficult without extremely detailed examinations. In addition to this being the first video recorded in 2025, this is also the first video to be recorded with a Google Pixel 8a. All videos from 2025 onwards are recorded as such, jumping from the Pixel 4 and its tremendous contributions to this channel's video and photography.
