Alfred Ferdinand Jodl was born on the 10th of May 1890, in the Franconian garrison town of Würzburg in Germany. Early schooling of Alfred Jodl moved with his father’s postings: Landau in der Pfalz, then Munich. The Second World War began on the 1st of September 1939. Poland fell in five weeks, but an uneasy winter followed while Hitler sought openings in Scandinavia and the West. The Armed Forces High Command hesitated over a Norwegian adventure but at the end of the day, they willingly drafted Operation Weserübung. On the 9th of April 1940 the plan became reality when German troops struck Denmark and Norway. While Denmark capitulated in just a few hours, Norway held for two months before surrendering. The largest success was the fall of France. This bitter enemy of the German empire in the First World War was defeated in a few weeks, and Nazi Germany was at the height of their military success. For this enormous triumph, Hitler also rewarded Alfred Jodl and he became General of Artillery. Victory over France scarcely cooled the printers before Jodl and his aides turned eastward. Directive 21 - issued on the 18th of December 1940, bore his conceptual stamp. The directive stated: “using of the army groups, a swift encirclement, and hopefully Soviet collapse within months.” To grease the wheels of terror he also helped create the infamous Kommissar Order of the 6th of June 1941, which commanded troops to execute captured Soviet political officers on sight. The order stated: “These commissars are not to be recognized as soldiers. The protection under international law for prisoners of war does not apply to them. After being separated, they are to be dealt with accordingly.” Join World History channel and get access to benefits: / @worldhistoryvideos Disclaimer: All opinions and comments below are from members of the public and do not reflect the views of World History channel.
