Funga Alafia is a West African welcome song and dance that originated in Liberia, Senegal, Mali, Ghana, and Nigeria. The song's words are from Liberia and/or Nigeria, and it uses Yoruba words. The word funga means "welcome", lafayette means "peace", and ashay means "and so it is". The song's meaning is "welcome we bid you peace and so it is we're glad that you're there". Djembe would of course not traditionally be taught in this way so perhaps think of this video as more of a guide rather than a play along :) There are many variations/versions of these rhythms/pieces, this one is ideal for children. Please note, these videos start with the right hand. If you're left handed you'll more than likely start with your left and just play the rhythms with the opposite hands. I have also selected a slow tempo to help learn the rhythms. When you're confident, try it at a faster tempo! Use whatever shakers and tuned percussion you've got!
