I've never put my life in someone else's hands like this before. I ride passenger while Tim off-roads his old Ford diesel truck across one of the most extreme routes in North America: the 240-mile Arctic Ocean Ice Road, from Deadhorse (Prudhoe Bay) to Barrow, Alaska. The truth is this ice road isn't a road at all-- it's a path carved anew each year, and is only traversable for a few months while the ocean, land, and rivers are frozen solid. Then it thaws, and vanishes. It's raw, frozen terrain-- snowdrifts, ice fields, and Arctic desolation. We off-road through sub-zero wilderness, four-wheel across shifting snowpack with no services, no gas stations. There's no turning back and no room for error when the trail seamlessly blends into the alien expanse, and diesel is in short supply. Tim mans the wheel while I keep us going with hot coffee and snacks from the passenger seat. Every mile presents new challenges, emotional and physical.
