Kadathu refers to the everyday crossing of people from one place to another by water. It is not a system or an institution, but a simple, repeated act, done quietly, often unnoticed. This documentary follows one of the few remaining kadathu rowers at Naduthuruthi Kadavu in Kozhikode. Through his daily work, the film observes what it means to live on an island shaped by routine, familiarity, and limits. He speaks about the nature of the job, how the crossings have changed over time, and what it is like to live in a place where everyone knows everyone else. As roads extend and more places become connected by land, crossings like these are slowly disappearing. What once felt ordinary is now becoming rare. The occupation of rowing people across — sustained for generations by necessity — is nearing its end. Kadathu is a record of this moment: of work that continues for now, even as it moves quietly into the past.
