On June 8th, a Ugandan MP was shot dead near his home in Matugga. Mr Ibrahim Abiriga, the representative for Arua Municipality was murdered alongside his brother Saidi Butele, who also doubled as his bodyguard. The two were killed at around 6pm by unknown people riding on a motorcycle as they approached the legislator’s home. According to New Vision, two men riding on a motorcycle without number plates are alleged to have committed the crime. “I have received news about the senseless killing of Arua Municipality MP, Hon Ibrahim Abiriga, and his bodyguard on the city's outskirts. I have tasked security agencies to expeditiously find these killers and the nation will be updated soon. May Hon Abiriga's soul rest in peace” President Museveni stated. Predicted own death In an earlier interview with Tuko, Abiriga seemed to predict his own death. Responding to a question on whether he works out, he stated that: “No. I don’t work out and I don’t go for these gym things. I just eat, sleep, eat, sleep. That’s all. When I don’t feel good, I go and see the doctor. Exercises for what at this age? You see, I am going to die soon." Penchant for yellow The late Abiriga, a firm supporter of Museveni’s presidency was also known to religiously don yellow outfits and drive in a yellow car, the colour associated with Uganda’s ruling party, the National Resistance Movement. n 2017, the deceased was one of the legislators pushing for a constitutional amendment seeking to remove the presidential age limit.
