The breeding pair of the Birch Bark Pack are a grizzled, old duo as you can see in this footage from last winter. The female is the smaller almost whitish-gray wolf and the male is the larger, rugged-looking wolf. Hard to know how old they are but we would suspect ~6-9ish years old or something. The pack was a 3 wolves this past winter—the breeding pair and a 2 year old male. We collared the young male this summer, now dubbed Wolf W4D, who is still with the pack. The pair did not produce a litter of pups this spring. And in late spring/early summer, the old female was no longer with the pack, and a new female was observed with the breeding male—which indicates the breeding female either died and was replaced, or was booted by another female. One interesting sequence we captured was the breeding male chasing a deer. The male was a minute behind the deer. However, we got footage of all 3 wolves in the pack an hour later, and the wolves clearly had not made a kill (i.e., no blood on fur, no distended stomachs from gorging on a kill). Ultimately, an unsuccessful chase is not that surprising. Although some think wolves can kill deer at will, this simply is not the case. Instead, wolves chase and test deer regularly in an attempt to identify deer that are vulnerable and they can kill.
