THIS VIDEO: Marc Cohen himself said that he has some anger issues. When watching videos of him working on the street, one might easily just categorize him as a Bruce Gilden clone. Cohen might have a confrontational style of taking pictures, but his choice of frame isn’t harsh, cruel or vindictive. Rather there’s a sense of the poetic and an understanding of composition, texture and nuance. His edits reveal a sensitivity and a visually sophisticated photographic eye. In 1966 he opened a commercial studio in Wilkes-Barre, a small Pennsylvania mine-town –He’d do whatever work came his way - like weddings or portraits – in order to make a living. This type of work can either numb the creative instinct or lead one to build up unhealthy levels of frustration - especially if there’s an artist struggling to emerge. For decades, Cohen's approach was to shoot three rolls of film over a two-hour walk, develop the rolls straightaway, have dinner - then go back to the darkroom and make eight or nine prints from the negatives – everything else was stored away in his archive. He said that his pictures weren’t about Wilkes-Barre but reflect his artistic vision. He’s a fantastic example of a photographer who managed to produce a unique and powerful body of work in his lifetime - without moving very far from home. 1-on-1 MENTORING: https://graemewilliams.co.za/mentor-p...
