AMBER VALLEY PARISH #18: HAZELWOOD Welcome back to Amber Valley folks, this week we’re in Hazelwood. Be careful how you’re spelling that. Until a few years ago, Hazelwood was spelt with the L and the E the other way around for some reason. Situated approximately 8 miles Northwest of Derby, Hazelwood Parish is principally reached via Duffield and the A6, or from the A517 Belper to Ashbourne road. It occupies one of the Southernmost reaches of the Pennines, and is just within the boundaries of the Peak District. It’s a small village, which is characterised by undulating, wooded farmland and stunning vistas both near and far. Historically, the parish dates back to Roman times. There was once a Roman Road which ran across a local hill known as The Chevin, which was a main thoroughfare. Later, the whole area was once part of the medieval Duffield Frith land holdings with its forestry, deer park and farming activities. There are nine Listed buildings, and all but one are predominantly constructed in stone. The oldest are Hazelwood Hall in Spring Hollow and Larch Tree Cottage on Hazelwood Hill. At the centre of it all is Hazelwood’s church, dedicated to St John the Evangelist, a memorial hall, and a playing field featuring the local bowls club. The parish boundaries also extend as far as the hamlet of Shottlegate. To sum it up, Hazelwood is haven for cyclists, horse riders and walkers, like me.
