This talk by Tiber Falzett (Head of Folklore and Ethnology, at UCD School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore), which took place on 5 February 2026, reflects on ontologies of (dis/em)placement in a more-than-human North Atlantic world through Scottish Gaelic and Irish seanchas, interspecies ethnography and birding as practice. Attending to avian vagrancy, when birds appear out of range amid extreme weather events and shifting climate patterns, the talk follows how human observations of such unexpected encounters become entangled with narratives of migration and memory, and how traditional ecological knowledge is applied and transformed in the diasporic imagination by speakers of an endangered language. It brings together seanchas (the intersubjective communication of intergenerational knowledge), dùthchas/dúchas ( multi-generational belonging to a place), and oiris/oireas (habitual return, encounter, and instinct among migratory birds and others) as relational ways of witnessing and, in turn, knowing displacement, mobility, and belonging in uncertain times.
