By Dr. Kylie Agnew-Francis. Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are on the rise and pose a significant threat to public health worldwide. It is estimated that 3.8 million people die each year due to IFIs, the majority of which are caused by species from the Candida, Cryptococcus, and Aspergillus genera. Currently, treatment options for IFIs are severely limited, with many of the more effective therapies unavailable in regions where they are most needed due to their high cost. Additionally, there has been a significant increase in drug resistance, as well as the recent emergence of multi- and even pan-resistant fungal strains, such as Candida auris (now known as Candidozyma auris). Taken together, these issues highlight an urgent and unmet need for innovative therapeutic strategies targeting IFIs. In this presentation, I will discuss the challenges associated with developing drugs against human fungal pathogens, with a particular focus on the need for new molecular targets, and explore how a class of herbicides, in use for over 30 years, might offer a potential solution.
