The Montauk Cutoff was a rail line in Long Island City, Queens, that was built in the 1900s for the purpose of connecting the LIRR Montauk Branch to Sunnyside Yard. Trains would be pulled in and out of Sunnyside Yard as well as freight cars and locomotives alone. By the 1970s, freight traffic slowed down and the line became seldom used. It was officially decommissioned by the MTA in 2015, and its future remains uncertain. Plans have been created to turn the rail embankment into an elevated public park, similar to the Highline in Manhattan, although nothing is official... Looking at the tremendous increase in residential development in Long Island City recently, it wouldn't be surprising if those plans come tp fruition.
