The star of the event was the running loco model showcased by Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), which captured the attention of attendees throughout the three-day exhibition Foundation Stone Laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad It all began on April 23, 1956, when the first President of India, Late Dr. Rajendra Prasad, laid the foundation stone of this historic factory. August 1961 - Birth of Banaras Locomotive Works The transformation officially took place in August 1961, with the establishment of Banaras Locomotive Works, previously known as Diesel Locomotive Works. Key Milestones Over the Years Over the years, BLW has achieved several milestones in electric locomotive manufacturing: In January 1964, BLW marked a significant achievement by releasing its first Broad Gauge Locomotive, the WDM-2, which was a pioneering step in electric locomotion. In November 1968, the workshop released its first Meter Gauge Locomotive, the YDM-4, a crucial development. February 1975 saw the workshop turning out its first Broad Gauge Shunting locomotive, the WDS-6. BLW extended its reach globally in January 1976 by exporting locomotives to Tanzania. December 2014 witnessed the inauguration of the Expansion Project of BLW by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. In April 2016, BLW was again honored with the 'Best Production Unit Shield 2015-16' of Indian Railways. The same month, BLW achieved another milestone with the production of the first Vacuum type Bio-Toilet equipped WDG-4D loco. October 2016, saw the dedication of the first phase of the Expansion Project of BLW to the Nation by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. December 2016 marked the flag-off of the 2000th High Horse Power loco. In February 2017, BLW rolled out its first electric loco, the WAP-7. March 2017 saw BLW obtaining certification for ISO 50001 for Energy Management and GreenCo Silver Rating under the GreenCo Green Company Rating System. In April 2017, BLW was once again honored with the 'Best Production Unit Shield 2016-17' of Indian Railways, a testament to its consistent performance. August 2017 marked another milestone with the certification of ISO 3834 for Fusion Welding of Metallic Materials. In January 2018, BLW obtained NABL Accreditation for Laboratories. March 2018 witnessed a groundbreaking achievement with the successful conversion of two old ALCO diesel locos (WDG3A) into Electric locos WAGC3 locos, a first-time feat in the world. March 2018 also marked the implementation of the 5 S Workplace Management System. April 2018, BLW was once again honored with the 'Best Production Unit Shield 2017-18' of Indian Railways for the third consecutive year. December 2018, BLW successfully converted two old HHP diesel locos (WDG4) into Electric locos WAG11. January 2020 saw the workshop obtaining IRIS Certification. In March 2020, the first-ever dual traction locomotive was turned out. January 2021, BLW obtained certification of ISO 50001:2018 for Energy Management System. December 2021, BLW once again excelled, bagging the 'Best Production Unit Shield 2020-21' of Indian Railways for the fifth time. December 2021, marked a historic achievement with the production of 45 locomotives in a single month, an all-time record. January 2022, the workshop celebrated the production of its 1000th Electric loco. March 2022, witnessed the highest-ever locomotive production of 367 in 2021-22. November 2022, saw the highest-ever Electric locomotive Bogies Production of 52 loco sets in a month. December 2022, marked the manufacturing of 8 shell assemblies of WAG9H with complete piping & painting for the second consecutive month. June 2023, the workshop celebrated the production of its 1500th Electric loco. A remarkable achievement was recorded in June 2023 with the production of 51 locomotives, setting a new all-time monthly production record. Banaras Locomotive Workshop has certainly come a long way since its inception, establishing itself as a key player in the Indian rail industry, with a growing global presence.
