Unveiling the mesophotic zones of Cyprus. The MESOPHOS project

This film documents the first systematic survey of Cyprus’s mesophotic zone (50–200 m) off Akrotiri and Dhekelia. The MESOPHOS team at the Marine & Environmental Research (MER) Lab used a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to examine 32 sites, revealing rich sponge, coral and anemone communities and several species recorded in Cyprus for the first time. The footage also shows pressures reaching these depths: marine litter and ghost gear, trawling disturbance, non-indigenous species, and coral mortality likely linked to warming. These slow-growing habitats recover poorly once damaged, underscoring the need for targeted protection and ongoing monitoring. Produced by MER Lab.
