1974 “Gapp & Roush” Mustang II Pro Stock car at Roush Collection in Livonia, MI. Drivers: Wayne Gapp and Jack Roush Engine: Gapp & Roush race-prepared 351 Cleveland Best Recorded Performance (1/4 Mile): 8.79 @ 152 mph “Don Hardy Race Cars produced the chassis for this 1974 Mustang II Pro Stock car. Delivered to the Gapp & Roush shop late in 1973 it was prepped by the team in advance of the 1974 race season. The duo had won the NHRA Pro Stock World Championship in 1973 with a 1973 Pinto, and hoped that the Mustang II, with a similar Aerodynamic cross-section and two inch longer wheelbase, which they speculated could only improve handling, would repeat that feat. Responsibility for testing the Mustang II fell to Jack Roush. At its first outing, the 1974 Gatornationals, Jack Roush finished runner-up in Pro Stock, and set the low ET for the event. Gapp, driving the world-championship winning Pinto from the previous season went out in the first round. The following weekend, at Maryland's Cecil County Raceway, the Mustang II ran a blistering 8.84 seconds at 154.90 mph, again with Jack behind the wheel. Satisfied with these performances, the team finished preparing a second Pro Stock car, another 1973 Pinto, which had been purchased from Canadian racer Barrie Poole. Gapp then took the reins of the Mustang II, while Jack began to run the newly-completed Pinto. In theory the Mustang Il should have been the ideal weapon with which to defend their championship. However, in competition the car struggled to adapt to changing weight break rules, which favored cars with wheelbases over 105 inches. The Mustang Il had just two finals wins in three appearances at NHRA national events. By early summer there were rumors circulating among the press and competitors that Gapp & Roush were working on a 4-Door Maverick to better take advantage of weight breaks. That Maverick, the infamous "Taxi", started initial testing in July of that same year. Coincidentally, this was just weeks before Jack Roush would be involved in a harrowing multi-roll wreck with his Pinto during an NHRA meet at Gateway. The incident damaged the Pinto beyond repair. With the Taxi ready for competition, Jack would become the primary driver of the Mustang Il, competing in a handful of events throughout the remainder of the year. The Mustang II was then sold to Puerto Rican drag racer Luiz Forteza early in 1975. The car passed through at least two other owners before finding its way back to Jack Roush in the mid-1990s.”
