HISTORY OF MINAS GERAIS | One of the Most Iconic States in Brazil | Globalizing Knowledge

The history of Minas Gerais began around 13,000 years ago when the first humans, called the Lagoa Santa People, arrived in this region. The skull of a young woman, dating from this time, was named Luzia and is considered the oldest human fossil in South America. Over time, the people who inhabited the territory of present-day Minas Gerais developed stone and bone tools, vegetable cultivation and ceramic products, and in the 15th century, around 100 indigenous groups lived in this region. With the arrival of the Portuguese, the territory corresponding to Minas Gerais became part of the Portuguese possessions and, during the 17th century, gold deposits were discovered in the current territory of Minas Gerais, leading to several exploration expeditions to the interior of Brazil and the settlement of this region. Due to the wealth of these lands, the Portuguese Crown intensified its control over the area to contain revolts and increase oversight, resulting in the establishment of the Captaincy of Minas Gerais in 1720. During the imperial period, coffee growing developed in Minas Gerais and, in the 19th century, the first advances in the mining industry appeared. The state began to have great political importance for the country at the beginning of the 19th century, when the oligarchs of Minas Gerais joined forces with the elites of São Paulo and established the so-called Coffee with Milk Policy, in which the presidency of Brazil alternated between Minas Gerais and São Paulo residents until the Revolution of 1930. From that moment on, the industrial sector of Minas Gerais developed even more, mainly in the metal-mechanic, electrical and transport sectors, and the state stood out as one of the largest economies in the country.
