A session excerpt from the Greater Philadelphia Business Coalition on Health 2025 Wellness Summit, this presentation by HealthNEXT President and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ray Fabius, explains how employers can use health and benefits data to build a population health strategy that keeps well people well, reduces risk, ensures access to care through a medical home, supports chronic disease management, and directs complex cases to the best care. HealthNEXT recommends integrating information into a data warehouse over time, starting by reviewing multi-year summary reports from vendor partners such as PBMs and health plans. Dr. Fabius emphasizes that healthcare spending understates the business impact because performance and productivity losses can be two to three times the cost of healthcare. Key data strategies include grouping related conditions (e.g., combining multiple behavioral health categories to show the true prevalence and gain C-suite attention) and requiring “waterfall” reporting from vendors to track engagement drop-offs across eligibility, outreach, enrollment, participation, completion, and outcomes. The presentation introduces a one-page “illness burden placement” view to summarize prevalent risk factors, reasons for care access, medication drivers, chronic conditions, high-cost claimant diagnoses, disability causes, and mortality. Dr. Fabius also outlines principles for selecting metrics—quantitative where possible, leading indicators, causal connections—and aligning dashboards to the Triple Aim (effectiveness, efficiency, experience) in a way that builds trust rather than fear, with results translated into lay language for the C-suite. 00:00 Using Data to Build a Population Health Strategy 00:57 Start with the Data You Have: Reports, Warehouses & the Productivity Case 02:09 Presenting Data for Impact: Grouping vs. Splitting Mental Health Trends 04:03 Demand Waterfall Reporting: Where Programs Lose People (Diabetes Example) 05:53 The One-Page 'Illness Burden Placement' Snapshot 06:43 Choosing the Right Metrics: Quantitative, Leading Indicators & Trust 07:50 Triple Aim Scorecards: Health, Cost/Productivity & Employee Experience 09:11 Wrap-Up: Integrate Data, Use Waterfalls, and Track Actionable Metrics
