The Knitting Factory opened in its original location at 47 East Houston Street in downtown Manhattan in 1987. I saw this performance there that year of John Zorn's Hu Die by Bill Frisell and Fred Frith with narration by Zhang Jinglin of text by Arto Lindsay that was translated into Chinese. The original Knitting Factory was a very cozy venue, but its popularity led within a year or two to a move further north to a bigger space farther uptown on Leonard Street, and eventually into Brooklyn and multiple locations around the world. This is a strange piece, that Zorn includes as part of his "game pieces." Although Frisell and Frith made a studio recording of Hu Die in 1986, it was not released by Zorn on an album until the 1997 release "New Traditions in East Asian Bar Bands." The collaboration of Zorn, Frisell and Frith evolved a year later into the Downtown Scene's equivalent of a "superband" with the formation of Naked City. I caught that band's first performance in May 1988, and will eventually digitize and upload it to this channel. Bill Frisell - guitar Fred Frith - guitar Zhang Jinglin - narration Recorded on a Sony Walkman D6C with a Sony ECM-102 stereo microphone.
