Jens Hoeppner, MD, University of Bielefeld, Bielefeld, Germany, discusses recurrence patterns from the Phase III ESOPEC trial (NCT02509286) of perioperative FLOT-based chemotherapy or preoperative chemoradiotherapy with CROSS in patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma. Findings indicate improved recurrence-free and distant metastasis-free survival with FLOT. Distant recurrence was the predominant driver of poor outcomes and occurred less frequently in patients receiving FLOT. These results highlight the potential of perioperative chemotherapy to reduce systemic relapse and improve long-term disease control in this population.
