A brief overview of eco-tourism, how it is defined and different ways in which it can be achieved Learning summary: What is Ecotourism? ● Driven by businesses and tourists, ecotourism means visiting places of natural beauty, in a way that leaves local ecosystems and communities intact, or even healthier than before. ● Ecotourism tends to focus on geological landmarks, flora and fauna, as well as cultural heritage, providing a firsthand education for curious travellers. ● These travellers, in turn, supply financial revenue for local economies that contribute directly to conservation and restoration work. ● Successful ecotourism delivers positive, memorable experiences for tourists and works in partnership with indigenous people, recognising their rights, customs and beliefs. ● Some eco-tourism practices are mandated by law, such as not taking dogs in certain wilderness areas unless they have received kiwi-aversion training and relevant permits. ● A single dog on the loose can cause enormous harm to slow-breeding kiwi populations; abiding by these kinds of restrictions helps to ensure future generations can enjoy Aotearoa's unique biodiversity as it exists today. ● Paying for the Department of Conservation’s Hut passes when you stay overnight at one of their huts, likewise helps DOC maintain facilities and protect our wildlife. ● Hunting can also be a part of eco-tourism, both by encouraging recreational hunters to travel to a particular location, and in New Zealand, by culling invasive pigs, deer, and goats which damage native ecosystems. ● For an idea of what hunting is all about, check out this docu-series on YouTube ○ Strider Media ● Ecotourism practices can be offered directly by businesses, either out of ethical convictions or to cater to demand from travellers. ● This could mean offering vegan or locally sourced produce, or guided trips with proceeds towards preservation.
