Date filmed: Monday the 5th of August 2024 Videos filmed at: 11:57 | 12:11 Route: Grantham to Skegness 'Poacher' Line Swineshead (SWE) Station Crossing type: Automatic Half Barrier Crossing (AHBC) Filming location: A17 Station Road, Swineshead Bridge (PE20 3PT) A half-barrier crossing located in the tiny, remote hamlet of Swineshead Bridge, seen in this video activating for both hourly services to/from Skegness via Boston. It is located next to Swineshead railway station, ironically almost completely cut-off and very hard to access on foot from the village it's named to serve. This level crossing is on the A17 - a vital, arterial road through this eastern bit of Lincolnshire - and is possibly one of the busiest roads you could ever expect to find a level crossing on. Only two trains a day in each direction stop at the station, and the many that pass leave as little over the minimum of 27 seconds from the start of the activation as possible, and even with these short activations, traffic builds up immensely. While half-barriers seem risky here, the problems of a full-barrier crossing would likely out-weigh the benefits due to the traffic carnage they would inevitably cause, and its surprising there's still no obvious endeavour to bypass it. Due to the crossing being risk-assessed to have very high risk from sun glare, as well as the very high levels of lorries, farm traffic, and Heavy Goods Vehicles in general using the crossing, a bizarre solution has been put in place here: the back-boards of the road traffic lights are twice the size as usual with the lights themselves no further apart than usual in the centre of them! Only two public highway crossings anywhere in the UK are known to have these, with the other also being in Lincolnshire near Immingham, but the ones here only have single, very thick supporting masts rather than any additional ones, and also 'witches fingernails' long shades for only their red lights. As for the barriers themselves here besides these very unusual looking lights, they date back to early 2020, and the alarms are very loud for Appellos.
